Can I have your opinion?
If you listen to the Modern Sales podcast, I’d love to hear from you! I have a quick, 2-question survey about adding more interviews to the podcast and I’d love you to weigh in with your opinion. You can take the survey in 30 seconds here:
If you’d like to witness transactional selling at its finest, go to a local Jiffy Lube.
If you’ve ever known anyone who worked at one, they’ll probably tell you they found the job soul-sucking. It’s an endless march of checklists and prompts with the sole purpose of providing consistent (if mindless) service, and up selling every customer on every additional service. It’ll teach you how to use a repeatable process when you sell.
Watch a toddler interact with her parents for 5 minutes and she’ll teach you something about persuasion.
Buy something online and you’ll learn about building trust and using effective (or ineffective) messaging to sell without ever interacting directly with your buyer.
Think back on your most captivating teacher from grade school and you’ll learn something about arresting and keeping attention. What could be harder than enthralling a group of ten year olds hopped up on sugar?
Take stock of the signals your Uber or Lyft driver uses to get a good tip – or what they could’ve done differently.
Lessons about sales are all around us because sales are constantly made in life. A few years back, Dan Pink wrote a book called To Sell Is Human. I agree.
It’s just part of life.
Ideas are everywhere – keep looking around and you’ll be surprised at what you find.
Your industry has a lot of clues about what will work and what won’t. That’s a good start – the question why do some things work. I encourage you to stay open-minded, pick out the things that may work, and discard the rest. Including the so-called “best practices” in your industry. A lot of those don’t work, or at least a lot of them won’t work for you. Just because your competition is doing it doesn’t necessarily mean it works.
Question for you today:
Where are you looking for your sales lessons?
