Modern Sales is a podcast for client services professionals, services salespeople, managers, and executives at firms that provide client services. There are two types of episodes we air: 1) solo, educational episodes with just Liston Witherill (the host); and 2) interview episodes, which is why you’re reading this.

Buyer Insights is a special series of episodes I’m doing with real buyers, just like you. Here’s the idea: most sales advice comes from the mouth of a salesperson, but selling is all about how buyers buy. That’s why I’d like to have you on.

Example Questions

I’m flexible on the questions I ask, but have put together some as an example for you. The questions are structured as key moments in the buying cycle.

The basic outline of what I’d like to know from you, and guests like you, is:

  1. How does a need first get surfaced, such that you consider buying services from an outside vendor?
  2. How do you find options for vendors?
  3. What’s your criteria for evaluating vendors?
  4. Who makes the decision to go with a specific vendor?
  5. What mistakes do salespeople make, that you wish they’d correct immediately? OR, what advice would you give to a salesperson selling services to your company?

Your Commitment

If you’re interested in being a guest on Modern Sales, all you have to do is:

  3. If we both want to record, we’ll set a recording time on a Monday
  4. I’ll send you a quick pre-interview survey to fill out
  5. Record the episode (a 1-hour commitment)

After Recording

Once the show is recorded, we’ll notify you that the recording is live, send you the link to the recording, and would greatly appreciate your sharing it via your and/or your company’s:

FAQs

What’s the format of the show?
Modern Sales is a podcast that has both solo and interview episodes between the host, Liston Witherill, and just one guest. Interviews typically last 25 minutes, but we require you to commit to 1 hour so we’re not rushed. The interview will focus on your experience building a business, and something actionable or strategic you can teach the audience.

How can I sound my best?
We record episodes via Cleanfeed remotely, so you don’t have to leave your office. Just make sure you’re in a quiet area with no distractions (any type of headphones are a great help, too!), and we highly recommend using at least a $30 headset, or preferably a decent USB microphone like this one.

If you have a webcam, it’d be great to see each other! We don’t publish the video, but it’s nice to chat face-to-face, albeit virtually. It may take up to 6 weeks to publish the episode after recording, depending on the backlog of current episodes.

When do you record?
We record on Mondays, and you’re free to book as far out into the future as the calendar will let you. You are, like we are, subject to the rule of our evil calendar robots.

Do I need to pay to be a guest?
Nope, you don’t pay anything! All you have to do is allocate 1 hour for recording, and a few minutes to fill out the pre-interview form.

I already get enough press…why do I need to do this?
You don’t need to do anything. If you feel you don’t want additional press opportunities and this is a commitment you’re not excited about, please don’t do it. If you’d like to pay it forward by helping other professionals in your field by sharing what you’ve learned, we’d love to have you.

What should I talk about?
You’re free to suggest a topic, and if not, we will. We’re pretty good at making our guests sound amazing.
